About Patanjali International Yoga Foundation

Preserving the Roots of Real Yoga Since 2001

In the heart of Rishikesh, where the sacred Ganga flows and the foothills of the Himalayas watch in silence, sits a place where yoga isn’t just practiced—it’s lived. Patanjali International Yoga Foundation (PIYF) was founded in 2001 with one goal in mind: to protect and pass on the authentic teachings of yoga, untouched and unchanged.

Over the past two decades, PIYF has become one of India’s most respected yoga institutions. It’s not a franchise. It’s not a trendy yoga resort. It’s a living gurukul—a modern ashram grounded in ancient wisdom.

Recognized by Yoga Alliance as a Registered Yoga School (RYS) offering 100, 200, 300, and 500-hour yoga teacher training programs, PIYF has welcomed thousands of students from around the world. But beyond certifications, what students often take back home is something more precious—an inner shift that lasts a lifetime.

A Mission Guided by Wisdom

While modern yoga often focuses only on flexibility or stress relief, PIYF believes in something deeper. Here, yoga is a complete science. It's not just asana. It's a way of transforming your body, your mind, and your entire way of being.

Our mission is to preserve the teachings of Sage Patanjali, who compiled the Yoga Sutras, a timeless guide to mastering the mind. We stick to original texts, original intentions. You won’t find made-up sequences or Instagram poses here.

We don’t just teach yoga—we live it, every day. From early morning meditations to fire rituals, every part of the day at PIYF is aligned with yogic discipline. Our students don’t just learn what yoga is—they begin to understand what it means to truly walk the path.

What Makes PIYF Different?

You might ask, why come all the way to India for yoga, when there’s so many schools everywhere now? It’s a fair question.
At PIYF, you're not just learning techniques; you're immersed in the source.
You'll experience the authentic spirit of yoga in the land where it originated.
It's an opportunity to connect with yoga on a deeper, more profound level, going beyond the physical postures.
But here’s what makes PIYF truly special:

Lineage-Based Teaching: We teach straight from the original Sanskrit scriptures—no commercial fusion, no shortcuts.

Authentic Indian Teachers: Our instructors are not just yoga certified—they’re lifelong practitioners, often trained in Ayurveda, Sanskrit, and Vedic studies. Our teachers are deeply rooted in the yogic tradition, offering unparalleled knowledge and guidance.

Gurukul System: We don’t just deliver lectures. Students live with their teachers, learn through daily immersion, and absorb yoga by being part of it.

Balanced Learning: You’ll study asana, pranayama, bandha, mudra, mantra, and meditation—but also diet, silence, ethics, and discipline.

Spiritual Excursions: Students visit sacred temples, caves, and riverbanks for real-world experiences of yogic energy—not just theory.

It’s the kind of place where you might be sitting in a philosophy class one moment, and the next, you're watching the sunrise over the Ganges with tears in your eyes—for reasons you can’t even explain.

The spiritual atmosphere of Rishikesh fosters a transformative environment for inner growth.

Lord Shiva – Adi Yogi

Lord Shiva – Adi Yogi

Considered the first yogi. The practices of Hatha Yoga, Tantra, and Kundalini trace back to him. Shiva’s wisdom inspires our kriyas and meditative discipline.

Sage Patanjali

The father of yoga philosophy. His Yoga Sutras are the heart of our teaching. We don’t just quote them—we explain, interpret, and live them.

Yogi Matsyendranath & Gorakshanath

The Yogic Lifestyle

More Than Asana: The Yogic Lifestyle

We teach Sanatana Yoga—the eternal path. It includes:

  • Yama & Niyama – Yogic ethics and inner values
  • Sthira Sukham Asanam – Postures that are steady, not flashy
  • Pranayama – Breathing to channel life force
  • Mudra & Bandha – Energy seals and locks
  • Mantra & Dhyana – Sound and silence
  • Self-inquiry – Studying not just books, but your mind
  • Svadhyaya - Continuous self-study and reflection to understand your true nature.
  • Tapas - Cultivating discipline and commitment to your spiritual growth.
  • Ishvara Pranidhana - Surrendering to a higher power and living in alignment with your dharma.
  • Seva - Selfless service to others, embodying compassion and kindness in action.
  • Satsanga - Association with truth and wisdom, through community and shared experiences.

You’ll eat simple food, rise early, observe silence, and perhaps fast. These are not restrictions—they're gateways to depth.

The Energy of Rishikesh

Rishikesh isn’t a place—it’s an energy. It’s where sages wrote scriptures, where the Ganga flows clean and holy, and where the air itself seems to hum with clarity. It's a place where the ordinary becomes extraordinary, and the potential for transformation is limitless.
You'll find yourself naturally drawn inward, allowing for profound self-reflection and growth.

Many students say

That even without classes, just being here would be enough. The experience will be etched in your memory, shaping your life's journey. You'll leave with a deeper understanding of yourself and the world around you. The friendships and connections you make will last a lifetime.
Graduation: What you really take with you sure; you’ll get a certificate.

Yoga Guru

But more than that, you’ll take something priceless:
  • A spiritual routine that centers you
  • Tools for healing others
  • A lifelong connection to India’s spiritual heritage
  • A deeper understanding of your own inner landscape.
  • A community of like-minded souls on a similar path.
  • The ability to navigate life's challenges with greater ease and grace.
  • A revitalized sense of purpose and connection to something larger than yourself.
  • New friendships from all over the world
  • And maybe… a version of yourself you didn’t know existed
  • A renewed sense of wonder and appreciation for the beauty of life.
  • The courage to live more authentically and follow your heart's true calling.
  • A toolbox of yogic practices that will support you throughout your life's journey.
  • A feeling of deep gratitude for the teachers, the community, and the sacred land of Rishikesh.

Yoga is not what you do. It’s what you become.

Yoga is not a few poses on a mat, it's a journey of transformation.
It's not simply about the exercises you perform, but the person you evolve into.
Yoga cultivates inner peace, strength, and wisdom, shaping your best self, inside and out.

Aadi Yogi Lord SHIVA

Aadi Yogi Lord SHIVA

Shiva is The Highest Auspicious Energy of the Universe. He is the eternal one who gave birth to himself, he has no begining or end. He knows all. He is pure consciousness, the creator of time, all-powerful, all-knowing.

Sage Patanjali

Sage Patanjali

Patanjali describes the third limb of yoga, which is the asana, as "Sthiram, Sukham Asanam" - Mean asana the position should be comfortable and stable, that is all the asana is about. Because "comfort" is such a misused word, maybe a closer word to "sukha" in English would be "ease."
